Benjamin Albert Williams was born at 3:27am on March 21, 2013!
On Wednesday, March 20th (Luke's 2nd birthday!) my water broke at 6:30pm. We called Mum and Dad so that they could come over and stay with Luke, then headed to the hospital once they arrived. I was in triage for a short time, then admitted to Labor and Delivery. Because my water had broken, my doctor put me on Pitocin in order to get things moving along. The whole thing was very similar to my experience with Luke, but the difference was that this time my contractions started on their own and got strong and painful pretty quickly! So it wasn't long before I asked for my epidural, then Drew and I were both able to get a bit of sleep. The other difference between this pregnancy and the last was time - with Luke, it was a very long time before I was finally able to push. But this time, it went much faster! Around 3:15am, the nurse checked me and called the doctor, and we were ready to go! I pushed for seven minutes, then Ben was born at 3:27am. He seemed fine at first, but began having some difficulty breathing. After being assessed by the NICU doctors, they decided that it would be best to admit him to the NICU. Although it was sad to have to send him to the NICU, it was definitely for the best, and we knew he'd be well taken care of. It turned out that he had a lot of fluid in his lungs, so they suctioned him out and put him on a CPAP machine. He was also put on IV antibiotics in case he had an infection. Much like Luke, he made progress quite quickly. Each day he made improvements, and was off the CPAP machine and IV within a few days. Once Ben showed that he was eating well and gaining weight, he was able to come home.
